On Wednesday, Lonnie Johnson, the inventor of iconic children’s toy Super Soaker soaked Hasbro in arbitration, reportedly receiving $72.9 million worth of sales royalties from the toymaker as part of a dispute over underpaid royalties.
“In the arbitration we got everything we asked for,” Johnson’s attorney Leigh Baier told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The arbitrator ruled totally in Lonnie’s favor.”
Johnson, a nuclear engineer, Tuskegee University Ph.D. recipient, and former NASA scientist, founded his company in 1989. Johnson holds more than 80 patents, with more than 20 pending, the company said, which also said sales of the Super Soaker have approached nearly $1 billion.
If you’re walking around downtown Seattle, look up: You’ll see off-white boxes, each one about a foot tall with vertical antennae, attached to utility poles. If you’re walking around downtown while looking at a smartphone, you will probably see at least one—and more likely two or three—Wi-Fi networks named after intersections: “4th&Seneca,” “4th&Union,” “4th&University,” and so on. That is how you can see the Seattle Police Department’s new wireless mesh network, bought from a California-based company called Aruba Networks, whose clients include the Department of Defense, school districts in Canada, oil-mining interests in China, and telecommunications companies in Saudi Arabia.
How accurately can it geo-locate and track the movements of your phone, laptop, or any other wireless deviceby its MAC address (its “media access control address”—nothing to do with Macintosh—which is analogous to a device’s thumbprint)? Can the network send that information to a database, allowing the SPD to reconstruct who was where at any given time, on any given day, without a warrant? Can the network see you now?
The SPD declined to answer more than a dozen questions from The Stranger, including whether the network is operational, who has access to its data, what it might be used for, and whether the SPD has used it (or intends to use it) to geo-locate people’s devices via their MAC addresses or other identifiers.
Seattle Police detective Monty Moss, one of the leaders of the mesh-network project—one part of a $2.7 million effort, paid for by the Department of Homeland Security—wrote in an e-mail that the department “is not comfortable answering policy questions when we do not yet have a policy.” But, Detective Moss added, the SPD “is actively collaborating with the mayor’s office, city council, law department, and the ACLU on a use policy.”
The ACLU, at least, begs to differ: “Actively collaborating” is not how they would put it. Jamela Debelak, technology and liberty director of the Seattle office, says the ACLU submitted policy-use suggestions months ago and has been waiting for a response.

Hamburger chef Jamie Oliver has won his long-fought battle against one of the largest fast food chains in the world – McDonalds. After Oliver showed how McDonald’s hamburgers are made, the franchise finally announced that it will change its recipe, and yet there was barely a peep about this in the mainstream, corporate media.
Oliver repeatedly explained to the public, over several years – in documentaries, television shows and interviews – that the fatty parts of beef are “washed” in ammonium hydroxide and used in the filling of the burger. Before this process, according to the presenter, the food is deemed unfit for human consumption. According to the chef and hamburger enthusiast, Jamie Oliver, who has undertaken a war against the fast food industry, “Basically, we’re taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest way for dogs, and after this process, is being given to human beings.”
Besides the low quality of the meat, the ammonium hydroxide is harmful to health. Oliver famously coined this the “the pink slime process.”
“Why would any sensible human being put meat filled with ammonia in the mouths of their children?” Oliver asked.
In one of his colorful demonstrations, Oliver demonstrates to children how nuggets are made. After selecting the best parts of the chicken, the remains (fat, skin and internal organs) are processed for these fried foods.
n reply to all of the bad press this process has received from Oliver, the company Arcos Dorados, the franchise manager for McDonalds in Latin America, said such a procedure is not practiced in their region. The same, it should be noted, applies to the product in Ireland and the UK, where they use meat from local suppliers.
In the United States, however, Burger King and Taco Bell had already abandoned the use of ammonia in their products. The food industry uses ammonium hydroxide as an anti-microbial agent in meats, which has allowed McDonald’s to use otherwise “inedible meat.”
Most disturbing of all is the horrifying fact that because ammonium hydroxide is considered part of the “component in a production procedure” by the USDA, consumers may not know when the chemical is in their food.
On the official website of McDonald’s, the company claims that their meat is cheap because, while serving many people every day, they are able to buy from their suppliers at a lower price, and offer the best quality products. But if “pink slime” was really the “best quality” that McDonalds can muster in the US, then why were they able do better in Latin America and Europe? More to the point, why can they apparently do better now in the United States?
These questions remains unanswered by the franchise which has denied that the decision to change the recipe is related to Jamie Oliver’s campaign. On the site, McDonald’s has admitted that they have abandoned the beef filler from its burger patties

Former UC Davis (University of California) Police Officer “John Pike” receives over $38,000 in workers compensation for SPRAYING students with PEPPER SPRAY!!!
Former UC Davis (University of California) Police Officer “John Pike” receives over $38,000 in COMPENSATION for spraying UC students back in November 2011 with UNAUTHORIZED pepper spray chemical for practicing civil disobedience/ (Occupy Wall st type) due to school financial increases.
Officer John Pike receives compensation due to anxiety attacks, depression and threats made to him and his family due to HIM spraying UC students!!!
This is one for the books right here. Im sure the students that got their faces burned with that chemical (which was not authorized) are thinking two questions:
1- WHAT THE HELL??
2. Should we switch our degrees and apply for the same occupation Officer John Pike had??
In March of last year, Craig Lewis, 55, was dying from a heart condition that caused build-ups of abnormal proteins, and not even a pacemaker could help save his life.
But two doctors from the Texas Heart Institute proposed a revolutionary new solution – install a ‘continuous flow’ device that would allow blood to circulate his body without a pulse.
Dr Billy Cohn and Dr Bud Frazier installed the device after removing Mr Lewis’ heart. Within a day, the patient was up and speaking with physicians.
Scroll down for video
Heartless: Craig Lewis, 55, was the first man to have a ‘continuous flow’ pump to replace his entire heart – and now has no pulse
No heart: The device uses blades to circulate blood through the body, replacing the heart
The two doctors had developed the device some time before and had tested it on nearly 50 calves.
They removed the animals’ hearts, and by the next day, the calves were doing everything they were the day before – eating, sleeping, and moving – but this time, without a heart pumping blood through their bodies.
‘If you listened to (the cow’s) chest with a stethoscope, you wouldn’t hear a heartbeat,’ Dr Cohn told NPR last June. ‘If you hooked her up to an EKG, she’d be flat-lined.’
Mr Lewis’ amyloidosis was getting worse, and doctors feared he would die soon without necessary efforts. Doctors grimly said he had 12 hours to live.
Revolutionary: Drs Billy Cohn, left, and Bud Frazier, right, invented the ‘continuous flow’ device and successfully installed it in Mr Lewis
Raising your pulse: The device, Dr Cohn says, has a ‘moderate amount’ of homemade materials in it
So, with the permission of Mr Lewis’ wife Linda, Dr Cohn and Dr Frazier installed the heart in March 2011.
‘I listened and it was a hum, which was amazing. He didn’t have a pulse.’
-Linda Lewis, wife of first man to receive artificial heart
The device works by supplying a continuous flow of blood through the body, using blades to move it along.
Dr Cohn said it contains ‘a moderate amount’ of homemade materials.
An incredible short directed by Jeremiah Zagar shows the journey of the world’s first heartless man in stunning detail.
His feature length documentary In A Dream was nominated for two Emmy’s in 2010.
According to NPR, thousands of patients – including former Vice President Dick Cheney – have similar ventricular assist devices, though it only assists an already beating heart.
Process: The incredible medical procedure was documented by Emmy Award-nominated director Jeremiah Zagar
Mr Lewis’ wife was astonished when she tried to listen for his pulse. ‘I listened and it was a hum, which was amazing,’ she told NPR. ‘He didn’t have a pulse.’
The Texas Heart Institute said that prior to having the revolutionary new device installed, Mr Lewis was reliant on a dialysis machine, a breathing machine, and an external blood pump.
In March of last year, Texas Heart Institute president Dr James T. Willerson called it ‘medical history in the making.’
The first artificial human heart prototype was successfully implanted in 1969 by Dr Denton Cooley.
